When blood doesn’t circulate to the lower limb or calf muscles correctly, the oxygen carried in blood fails to reach muscle tissue and cells. As a result, muscle cells and tissue can’t maintain their physiological  function properly. 

Which ultimately result in muscle tightening and cramping. It usually persist for seconds to minutes. After the cramp eases, the area might be sore for hours to days..

A muscle cramp or leg cramp whatever we say, usually happens when we use a muscle too much for heavy work or prolonged period of time, after straining it, losing body fluids and dietary minerals through sweat or simply holding a decubitus for a long time. Whatever the main reason behind leg cramps cause is still unknown.

Most of them are not so harmful. But some of them might be happened due to medical concern. For example:

  • Poor blood supply : poor blood supply causes deficiency of minerals and important elements of cellular energy production inside ta cells. This may happen due to narrowing of arteries that carry blood from heart to leg. As a result during exercise legs and feets may feel cramping pain but after stopping exercise very soon the pain will go away.
  • Nerve compression: Another reason behind cramping pain in leg and foot might be nervous system related issue. Most probably nerve compression.  Pressure on the nerves in the spine or any problem in the  innervation site also can cause cramping pain in the leg. This pain get worsen when one tries to walk or give pressure to that muscle.
  • Deficiency of minerals:  There are some minerals Which includes potassium, calcium and magnesium which are very important for many physiological function.  Their deficiency in the diet can cause muscle cramp. Some medicines like diuretics causes excessive urination to reduce high blood pressure can drain these important minerals also.
